AP plans protection wall to keep Konaseema islands safe from Godavari floodwaters

Konaseema: A 3.5 km-long flood protection wall will be built to prevent the Godavari River from flooding the island villages of Pottilanka, Thanelanka, Kunalanka, Vivekananda Varadhi and Kondukuduru Lanka. The wall is said to cost around Rs 150 crore.

As a part of his two-day visit to flood-affected districts, chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy visited Gurajapulanka and Ramalyapeta in Mummidivaram mandal of Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district on Tuesday. He promised crop loss compensation to the farmers before the end of the kharif season.

During an interaction with the villagers, Jagan said, “We have instructed the collector to immediately assess crop loss and conduct a social audit by going through a list of the farmers and the land they possess.”

The farmers who suffered crop loss but couldn’t find their names listed for compensation were asked to complain at the Rythu Bharosa Kendra (RBK) or the village secretariat. Besides providing compensation, the CM also promised to build a wall in a few villages of the Konaseema district to avoid erosion of land during floods.

Around Rs 2,000 as financial assistance was provided to the flood-affected families, apart from supplying essential commodities like milk and vegetables. In addition, Rs 10,000 was also provided to those whose houses were damaged. Jagan directed the officials to provide Rs 10,000 for each thatched house.

Jagan, during his speech, highlighted that in the YSRCP government, collectors have been given sufficient time and resources to carry out relief operations by mobilising the entire official machinery.
