Visakhapatnam: A 34-year-old foreign traveler who came from Ireland to Vizianagaram has tested positive for the Omicron variant. This is the first case of Omicron in Andhra Pradesh.
According to the Andhra Pradesh director of public health (DPH), the traveler landed at Mumbai airport and tested negative for COVID-19 after an RT-PCR test. He was allowed to travel to Visakhapatnam on 27 November. Later, he traveled to Vizianagram where he tested positive for COVID-19 after an RT-PCR test. His sample was sent to CCMB, Hyderabad, for genome sequencing and the reports came back Omicron positive.
The DPH said the man does not have any symptoms. An RT-PCR test conducted on 11 December came back negative for COVID-19. There are no other Omicron cases in the state, the DPH added.
So far, 15 foreign travelers have tested positive for COVID-19. All 15 samples were sent to CCMB for genome sequencing. The authorities have received the whole-genome sequencing reports of 10 cases out of which only one tested positive for the Omicron variant.
The DPH has asked the public not to worry or believe in any rumors but continues to take precautions and follow social distancing, wear masks, and wash hands regularly.
