Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh State Transport Department has decided to do away with issuing driving licenses and RC cards and go completely digital. This is aimed at building citizen-friendly departments and increasing ease of working governance. This system is in effected from July 28.

The state transport department’s new initiative of paperless digital driving licenses and digital RC cards would replace the old system of printing and issuing cards. The issued cards will be available on DigiLocker/M-Parivahan apps. Those who do not use mobile phones can take a print of the digital cards and keep it with them.

People used to pay an application fee of Rs 200 and postal charges of Rs 35 for each card. It was discontinued at the closing hours on Friday. The new digital cards are being issued at no charge.

“The process of issuing digital driving licenses and digital RC cards will be convenient for motorists. We do not even charge fees for the cards. It is enough to keep the cards available on the mobile phones under the DigiLocker system,” said MK Sinha, state transport commissioner.

All those who have already paid for physical cards but have not yet received so far would receive the card at their postal address. The process to that end has been initiated. During the traffic police and transport department officials’ checks, digital formats would be accepted.
