Amaravati: A total of 83,202 cases under various sections were registered in Andhra Pradesh during the 2014-19 term under the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government, while as many as 1,00,508 cases were recorded under the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) regime between 2019-24.

In response to questions raised by MLCs Varudhi Kalyani, Kalpalatha Reddy, and Yesu Ratna in the Assembly regarding law and order, Home Minister and TDP leader Vangalapudi Anitha stated that the crime rate and heinous incidents have been higher in the past five years when compared to the TDP’s tenure in 2014. The crime rate under the YSRCP government was 28.8% higher, she said.

The number of cases registered from January to October between 2019-2024 is as follows:

2019: 17,746

2020: 17,089

2021: 17,752

2022: 25,503

2023: 22,418

2024: 14,650

Speaking at the Assembly, Anitha highlighted the efforts taken by the TDP government to improve law enforcement, such as establishing help desks for women and upgrading Disha police stations into dedicated units for women’s safety. Additionally, coordinated efforts with Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), ICW (Indian Child Welfare), Railways, Border Security Force (BSF), and Justice Departments focus on preventing missing cases, she said.

Between June and October 2023, an average of 59 crimes per day were reported, amounting to 8,855 cases. During the same period in 2024, 7,234 cases were recorded, reflecting an 18% reduction in crime compared to the previous year.

Anitha also alleged that under the YSRCP regime, there was no response even to a gangrape near the residence of former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
