CBI arrests Vijayawada GST official for taking bribe

CBI arrests Vijayawada GST official for taking bribe

Vijayawada: The CBI arrested the superintendent of Central goods and services tax (CGST) of the Amaravati division, Vijayawada, while accepting a bribe of Rs. 8,000 from a goldsmith.

The goldsmith had applied for registration with the GST department, Vijayawada. The superintendent, John Moses, demanded Rs 10,000 to issue a registration certificate. During negotiations, the official reduced the bribe amount to Rs. 8,000.

Unwilling the pay the bribe, the complainant approached the state ACB officials of Vijayawada on 10 December and told them that the GST superintendent was demanding money to get his shop registered. The CBI officials laid a trap and caught Mr. Moses while accepting the bribe.

Following the arrest, searches were conducted at the office and residential premises of the official in Vijayawada which led to the recovery of certain incriminating documents.

A case has been registered against Mr. Moses. He was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
