Eluru: In a suspicious lock-up death, a man died by suicide in the Bhimadole police station in Eluru district.

On 1 May, Apparao was caught in a chain-snatching case in Polasanipalli village. The villagers tied him to a tree and beat him up. He was later handed over to the Bhimadole police. Apparao was also involved in a few more robbery cases.

On Wednesday morning, Apparao was found dead in the police station bathroom. His family blamed the police and alleged that they had tortured him. They said the police were set to produce him in the court but instead they kept him in the police station for the past three days.

According to the police, the accused was found hanging from a curtain in the bathroom. The police took him to Bhimadole hospital. He died while he was being taken to Eluru government hospital for better treatment.

The relatives of the deceased are demanding the government make a detailed inquiry into his death.
