Chittoor drug raid: Former Mayor injured in police action; TDP leaders protest

Chittoor: A high drama was witnessed on Thursday night when police raided the house of Purna, a worker of former Mayor and TDP leader Katari Hemalatha. Police alleged that he has concealed ganja in his house at Santhapeta. Police later took Purna into custody.

TDP leader injured

TDP leader Hemalatha and other leaders rushed to the spot and staged a protest. They tried to block the jeep. Police, however, tried to speed off to avoid a law and order problem. In the process, the vehicle ran over the Mayor. She suffered a minor fracture and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

TDP leaders blame the police

On 23 June evening, former Mayor Katari Hemalatha wrote to Chittoor ASP Jagadish alleging that unknown persons are threatening Prasanna who is a witness in the murder case of her in-laws, Katari Anuradha and Mohan. Prasanna is the brother of Purna and the worker of Hemalatha. Purna and his family alleged that soon after the TDP leader wrote the letter, police tried to frame them in false cases. They said police tried to store ganja in their house to frame them.

What do the police say?

Chittoor II town Circle Inspector Yatindra said they found ganja in Purna's house. Police denied allegations that they ran a jeep over the former Mayor.
