Visakhapatnam: The severe cyclonic storm 'Asani' in the Bay of Bengal has hit flight operations with several airlines cancelling flights in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh. All IndiGo flights coming into Vizag airport and taking off from Vizag (23 arrivals and 23 departures) were cancelled on Tuesday as a precautionary measure in view of Cyclone Asani.
Airport director K. Srinivasa Rao said AirAsia Delhi-Vizag-Delhi and AirAsia Bengaluru-Vizag-Bengaluru have been cancelled as of now. Air India also cancelled two arrivals and two departures from Vizag on Tuesday.
As per IMD predictions, severe cyclonic storm Asani will reach close to Kakinada and Visakhapatnam coasts by 11 May morning and move along Andhra Pradesh coast and weaken into a cyclonic storm.
Severe cyclonic storm Asani lies over west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, some 260 km southeast of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, 300 km south of Visakhapatnam, 490 km south-southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha, and 570 km south-southwest of Puri in Odisha. Cyclone Asani, moving at a speed of 10 kmph, is likely to move north-westwards till Tuesday night and reach the north Andhra coast and adjoining Odisha coast.
Thereafter, Cyclone Asani is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra and Odisha coasts.
