Dowry death: Husband, mother sentenced to seven-year imprisonment in Vizianagaram

By Newsmeter Network Published on 25 Feb 2021 4:43 AM GMTVizianagaram: First Additional District judge in Vizianagaram K Sudharani on Wednesday sentenced a man and his mother to seven years imprisonment in a dowry death case.
According to the prosecution, Pentapati Chandrasekhar and his mother P Indravathi were found guilty of harassing P Ramanamma who ended her life in December 2016.
Vizianagaram police said that Chandrasekhar, a resident of YSR Nagar in Vizianagaram Town, married to Ramanamma, a native of Pudimadaka under Atchutapuram Mandal in Vizag district in February 2016.
Both Chandrasekhar and his mother Indravathi physically and mentally harassed Ramanamma for additional dowry. They later forced her to leave their house.
Apparently disappointed with the harassment for dowry, Ramanamma set herself on fire on December 22, 2016. She was admitted to the hospital with severe burn injuries, but she did not survive.
Based on the statement of the victim, the then Sub-Inspector of Two-Town police station, Ravi registered a case against Chandrasekhar and his mother P Indravathi for dowry harassment and death.
Based on the dying declaration of the victim, the police filed a charge sheet citing that unable to bear the harassment, Ramanamma ended her life by self-immolation within a year after her marriage.
The judge sentenced Chandrasekhar and his mother to seven year rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 60,000.
