East Godavari: Drug cartel busted; 620 kilos Ganja seized, one arrested

Police have busted a major drug syndicate and seized 620 kilograms of Ganja from a lorry near Krishnavaram toll plaza on the national highway in East Godavari district. A smuggler was arrested and two others managed to give cops a slip.

Vijayawada: Police have busted a major drug syndicate and seized 620 kilograms of Ganja from a lorry near Krishnavaram toll plaza on the national highway in East Godavari district. A smuggler was arrested and two others managed to give cops a slip.

Police intercepted a lorry near Krishnavaram toll plaza on the national highway in the wee hours of Wednesday. During the search, cops recovered 620 kgs of Ganja packed in 21 bags. Its estimated cost is over Rs 12.40 lakhs.

A police team headed by sub-divisional police officer Aritakula Srinivasarao arrested Abdul Kalim Nazir Shaik (51), a native of Gulisthan Nagar, Amaravati, Maharashtra.

The accused has told the police that the Ganja was purchased at Darakonda village in Visakhapatnam agency area and was being transported to Maharashtra.

Two accused, who gave cops a slip hail from Darakonda in Visakhapatnam and Amravati in Maharashtra. Two police teams have been constituted to nab the absconders.

SP Ravindranath Babu said the police would come down heavily on the Ganja smugglers and other rowdy elements involved in such illegal activity. He said a strict vigil is being kept on the movement of vehicles especially those coming from agency areas to combat ganja smuggling.

A week ago, the East Godavari police seized 1423.92 kg of ganja worth Rs 28.48 lakh from Gollaprolu. Police arrested three men for transporting the banned contraband in a lorry which was seized during a routine check along NH-21.
