Vizianagaram: Nearly two years after an elderly woman was killed and her valuables stolen in Salur town of Vizianagaram district, the police have solved the murder mystery and arrested the accused.

The Vizianagaram police chief, B. Raja Kumari, said the 70-year-old G. Shankunthalamma had been living alone in a rented house for the past two decades. On 1 September 2019, Shankunthalamma was found dead in the house.

Shankunthalamma's son G. Trinatha Rao noticed injuries on his mother's face and suspected that someone had murdered her in order to steal her gold ornaments that were worth over Rs. 1.5 lakh. He found that his mother's gold ornaments, including bangles and a chain, were missing.

Based on his complaint, the Salur police registered a murder case under sections 302 and 380 of the IPC. The police started an investigation but failed to get any single concrete clue to solve the murder mystery. They interrogated over 10 suspects but the case remained unsolved.

Recently, the police found that a youngster had tried to sell some gold to a gold merchant in Vizianagaram town. The cops nabbed Sheik Imran (26) who confessed to killing Shankunthalamma by strangling her and stealing her gold. The police recovered over 80 gms of jewelry worth Rs. 1.5 lakh from him.
