ATM fraud: Guntur youth posed as bank manager, cheated 100; held

Vizianagaram: Police have arrested a 27-year-old youth who posed as a bank manager to cheat people on the pretext of helping them in withdrawing cash from ATM kiosks. Police said he has cheated more than 100 gullible customers so far.

The accused has been identified as K Vidyasagar, a native of Guntur. Police have seized Rs 2.3 lakh cash,26 gms of gold, and several ATM cards.

Superintendent of Police, Vizianagaram, M Deepika said that the accused posed as a bank manager to the security guards at ATMs. He used to enter ATMs on the pretext of helping the customers. The accused used to target senior citizens and women from the rural pockets, who needed help to withdraw cash from the ATMs.

The accused used to take the original ATM cards of people, on the pretext to help them withdraw cash. After taking their debit cards and PINs, he used to give them fake cards. He then used to go to other ATMs and withdraw cash, police added.

"We have received some complaints from victims in Vizianagaram. The victims mentioned that an unidentified man diverted their attention and siphoned off cash on the pretext of helping them withdraw money from the ATM kiosk," Deepika said.

Inspector of Two-Town police station Ch Laxmana Rao said they nabbed the accused near an ATM kiosk at Dasannapeta when he was trying to commit the crime using the same modus operandi on Saturday.

"The investigation has revealed that Vidyasagar had committed over 100 crimes by adopting the same modus operandi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana," Deepika said.
