Amaravati: Defending his government’s decision to make public the alleged adulteration of Tirupati laddus, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday said that withholding the information would have amounted to ‘sacrilege’ and a betrayal of public trust.
Addressing the Assembly, he asserted that transparency was essential to protect the sanctity of temples and uphold the faith of devotees.
‘Concealment would have been sacrilege’
Speaking on the floor of the House, the Chief Minister said the government had a moral responsibility to disclose the findings related to the alleged adulteration.
“If we didn’t disclose it, it would be a sacrilege for us. Tomorrow, a question would arise, why didn’t the government inform the public?” he said, adding that failing to act transparently would have made the government accountable for any future discrepancies.
CM Naidu emphasised that faith and sentiment of devotees could not be compromised under any circumstances.
Allegations date back to 2024
The controversy dates to September 2024, when CM Naidu alleged that during the previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led regime, substandard ingredients and animal fat were used in preparing the famed Tirupati laddus at the Sri Venkateswara Temple.
The remarks, made during an NDA legislative party meeting, triggered a massive political storm. The Tirupati laddu, considered sacred and sought after by crores of devotees across the country, holds immense religious significance.
The allegations sparked nationwide outrage and were said to have hurt the sentiments of members of the Hindu community.
Assurance on temple sanctity
Reiterating his government’s commitment, CM Naidu told the Assembly that all temples in the state have since been ‘cleansed’ and necessary corrective measures taken.
“There is no possibility of hurting anybody’s sentiments. The NDA government will take full responsibility for preserving the sanctity of every temple,” he said.
The Chief Minister maintained that safeguarding religious institutions and ensuring transparency in matters of faith remain a priority for his administration.
