Indian Coast Guard apprehends 2 Sri Lankan fishing boats, 11 crew members

The Sri Lankan fishing boats were apprehended about 175 NM from Kalingapatnam on 10 November. The SL fishing vessels were engaged in fishing in Indian EEZ without valid licenses and documents.

Indian Coast Guard apprehends 2 Sri Lankan fishing boats, 11 crew members

Visakhapatnam: Indian Coast Guard ship Vigraha apprehended two Sri Lankan fishing boats along with 11 crew while fishing in Indian EEZ. They were escorted to Kakinada for further investigation on Saturday.

The Sri Lankan fishing boats were apprehended about 175 NM from Kalingapatnam on 10 November. The SL fishing vessels were engaged in fishing in Indian EEZ without valid licenses and documents.

As per MZI Act 1981, fishing and poaching by foreign vessels in Indian EEZ is an offence thereby the Sri Lankan fishing vessel violated the Act and UNCLOS. A joint investigation and rummaging are being carried out by the Marine police, the fisheries department, Customs, and Intelligence Bureau at Kakinada. Subsequently, the fishing boats and crew will be handed over to the marine fisheries department and the Marine police, respectively, for further proceedings.
