Visakhapatnam: A newborn baby boy said to be hours old was found abandoned in the toilet of a general compartment on board a Dhanbad-Alleppey Bokaro express train at Visakhapatnam Railway station. The infant was shifted to the government railway hospital. The baby boy's condition is stable, said the railway police.

A few commuters who were on the same train told the police that a woman, who seemed to be in her late 20s, had boarded the train with the child in her arms, when the train halted at Visakhapatnam station. Just as the train was about to pull out of the platform, she disembarked hurriedly without the infant.

The passengers on the train alerted the Government Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force. The baby, swaddled in a bedsheet, was kept in a washbasin inside the toilet. The police are examining the footage of cameras at the railway station to track down the woman.

"The baby boy may have been born to an unwed mother or is the outcome of an illicit relationship. We have registered a case under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)," added the police.
