Mr. Lokesh condemned the latest attack on a couple and the rape of the woman near Sattenapalli in Guntur district.
A woman was allegedly gang-raped by four persons near Medikonduru crossroads in Guntur district on Wednesday night. The couple from Sattanapalle mandal was returning on a motorbike after attending a wedding in Guntur city on Wednesday night when they were intercepted by some thugs who threatened them with weapons.
The four attacked the woman's husband and tied his hands and legs. They then took the woman to a nearby field and raped her. The couple went to the Sattenapalli police station at midnight but the police refused to register a complaint.
The shocking incident took place amidst a raging debate on the rising atrocities against and victimization of girls and women in the state. In a statement, Mr. Lokesh said it was shocking that the police had refused to register a case and merely told the couple that the spot where the incident took place was not located within their police station limits.
The police said the incident took place under the Guntur Urban police limits but they had come to the Guntur Rural station. The Sattenapally police have come under severe criticism for refusing to lodge a complaint despite orders from superiors to register a zero FIR wherever the incident takes place and transfer the case to the concerned police station. They sent back the couple with advice to go to another police station.
The Jagan Reddy government is not taking action despite the increasing threat to the safety and security of women, Mr. Lokesh said and asked whether it was democratic to deploy thousands of policemen to foil his visit to Narasaraopet town when he was just going there to call on the family members of a victim. Jagan is using the police for political vendetta but is not providing security to the common people, Mr. Lokesh alleged.
