Anantapur: A piece of a betel nut has been found inside the lungs of a 60-year-old woman.
The foreign object caused over six months of persistent cough, frequent fevers, and difficulty in breathing for the woman until it was removed by the doctors at KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur.
Dr Yashovardhan Mangishetti, Consultant Advanced Interventional Pulmonologist at KIMS Saveera, shared details of the case.
Problem was only treated as an infection at first
Despite consulting several hospitals, the woman was only treated for infection for her persistent cough and fevers. Finally, she approached KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur, where a breakthrough diagnosis and treatment brought her much-needed relief.
“Upon conducting advanced tests, we discovered a foreign object lodged deep inside her airway. We decided to proceed with a more advanced approach to extract the object using rigid bronchoscopy and rigid forceps, which proved to be successful,” said Dr Yashovardhan Mangishetti.
Advanced interventional pulmonology
“The technique that helped the woman is a part of advanced interventional pulmonology. It allows us to open airways and remove foreign bodies even in cases where conventional treatments fail. This not only restores normal breathing but can also be lifesaving in many cases,” the doctor said.
After the procedure, the woman’s airways were fully cleared and restored. As a result, her symptoms, cough, fever and breathlessness, subsided almost immediately.
Dr Yashovardhan emphasised, “Sometimes, what appears to be a simple cough or fever could be caused by a completely different issue like a foreign body in the airway. With timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment by skilled specialists, lives can be saved.”
