Vizianagaram: Unidentified miscreants stormed Sri Kodanda Ramaswamy temple in Nellimerla in Vizianagaram district and beheaded the 400-year-old idol of Lord Rama.
The head is still missing and the police have launched a massive operation to track down the miscreants.
District superintendent of police B Raja Kumari some unidentified persons entered the temple and vandalized the statue of Lord Rama and took away the head. Other idols of Seetha, Lakshman, and Anjaneya Swamy were untouched.
The SP said police teams are combing the bushes around the hill to find any clues. She said a case was registered in Nellimerla police station and special teams were formed to track down the culprits and locate the missing head.
Sniffer dog and CLUES teams were dispatched to the temple to collect fingerprints and other material evidence.
``We will catch the culprits very soon,'' she added.
