Visakhapatnam: With the Dasara festival just around the corner (5 October), the prices of sheep, goat, and country chicken are on the rise. Meat traders are procuring the animals from neighboring Odisha to meet the demand as some people sacrifice these animals during the festival.

The price of sheep and goat, each weighing between 8 to 10 kg, has already gone up to Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 14,000 each in the run-up to Dasara from Rs. 8,000 during the normal days. During Dasara, they are expected to go up to Rs. 16,000 depending on the demand. The price of roosters has also increased by 30% as the meat traders are selling roosters weighing 2 kg at Rs. 1,900 as against the normal price of Rs. 1,200.

The demand for sheep is more than that for goats this time. "We sold some big size sheep weighing 15 to 20 kg at Rs. 20,000-25,000 on Sunday. We are expecting the price of sheep to further increase in the coming days," said B. Gopal, a shepherd.

Dasara is a festival for foodies (especially non-vegetarians) in most parts of the region. Animal sacrifice is also practiced in some urban and rural areas in the Vizag region during the festival. Owners of vehicles and machinery units perform animal sacrifices (rooster or sheep or goat) on Dasara as a tradition and offer them to Goddess Durga on Dasara day as part of the Ayudha puja. Compared to the previous year, the demand for sheep, goats and meat has increased.

"We have decided to increase the price of mutton to Rs. 900 per kg from Rs. 800 per kg from 5 to 12 October as the demand for meat will be high during Dasara. We are also procuring goats and sheep from neighboring Odisha. Similarly, the price of country chicken will be around Rs. 800 per kg during the festival," said Sk. Hussain, a meat trader at Madhurawada in Vizag city.
