Amaravati: In big news for the people of Andhra Pradesh, the State government has approved the first phases of the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada metro rail projects. The estimated costs of both projects are said to be Rs 11,498 crores and Rs 11,009 crore respectively.

Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRCL) Managing Director submitted revised proposals seeking implementation of the Visakhapatnam Metro Rail Project in two phases viz., Phase-I being for 46.23 km at an estimated completion cost of Rs 11,498.00 crore (2024 prices, excluding the cost of land) and consisting of the following three corridors.




In Visakhapatnam, Phase-I will feature three corridors: Steel Plant Junction to Kommadi (34.40 km), Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.08 km) and Thatichetlapalem to China Waltair (6.75 km), spanning a total of 46.23 km with 42 stations. The project will require 99.75 acres of land, costing Rs 882 crores.






Phase II consists of the 4th corridor viz., Kommadi to Bhogapuram (30.67 km)

In Vijayawada, Phase-1 consists of two corridors: Gannavaram to Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) and PNBS to Penamaluru, totalling 38.40 km with 34 stations. The estimated cost for the first phase is Rs 11,009 crore, with Rs 1,152 crore allocated for land acquisition.




Phase II, which is the third corridor, will be connecting PNBS to Amaravatiā€™s Reservoir Station.

Detailed Project Report

The Managing Director, APMRCL, has submitted that the KfW, the German Funding Agency, on behalf of Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation has entered into an agreement with Systra Consultants, France for the preparation and submission of the Detailed Project Report in line with the New Metro Rail Policy Guidelines and requested the government to constitute a Steering Committee to examine the technical reports prepared by Systra Consultancy during the preparation of DPR for Light Metro/LRT in Vijayawada and to recommend suggestions in the process of preparation of DPR.

The projects will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with 40 per cent funding from the Centre and 60 per cent from private developers.
