Nellore couple throw grand feast for new son-in-law; serve 108 types of dishes

Nellore: The trend of serving more than 100 varieties of dishes to the son-in-law during Sankranthi started in the Godavari region. Now, the people of Nellore have followed suit and are serving their son-in-law a feast. The trend was recently seen in Oosapalli village under Podakaluru mandal in Nellore district where a couple, Sivakumar and Sreedevamma, hosted a feast where 108 varieties of dishes were served to their daughter Shivani and son-in-law Shiva Kumar.

Shivani and Shiva got married recently and her parents wanted to make their son-in-law’s first visit to their home a memorable one. “We wanted to show our hospitality for our son-in-law. We had been planning for about a week and got 108 dishes prepared to surprise him. The dishes include chicken, mutton, prawns, fish, flavored rice, and sweets,” said Sivakumar and Sreedevamma.

This year, such a feast was first seen in Eluru district when Bheema Rao and Chandraleela hosted a lavish feast for their newlywed daughter and son-in-law Kusuma and Muralidhar. With a massive spread of 379 food items, it was called “West Godavari Vindu Bhojanam.” The feast included 40 types of flavored rice, 20 roti chutneys, 40 curries, 40 fries, 90 sweets, 70 snacks, and drinks.

According to Bheema Rao, during his daughter’s engagement, his future son-in-law asked about the cuisine of the Godavari region. It was then that they decided to surprise him. It almost took eight months of planning for the grand feast.
