On 75th Independence Day, AP remits sentences of 175 life convicts

By Newsmeter Network Published on 15 Aug 2022 11:35 AM GMTAmaravati: On the occasion of India's 75th Independence Day, the Andhra Pradesh government decided to give special remission to 175 life convicts and 20 other convicted prisoners (phase I) imprisoned in various jails across the state. These are prisoners who maintained good conduct during their terms in prison, the government said.
Earlier, the government issued a GO to constitute a standing committee under the chairmanship of the principal secretary to the government, Home Department, to review the list of eligible life convicts and recommend them to the state government. The director-general of prisons and correctional services, Andhra Pradesh, has sent the list of eligible life-convicted prisoners who fulfil the conditions.
In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 161 of the Constitution of India, read with section 432 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, (Central Act 2 of 1974), the Governor of Andhra Pradesh remitted the unexpired residual sentence of 175 life-convicted prisoners.
According to the GO, all premature releases under the GO shall be subject to execution of a personal bond of Rs. 50,000. The prisoners, after being released, shall appear before the probation officer and ponce station concerned once in three months till the completion of the unexpired portion of the sentence. If he/she commits any criminal offences, they will be arrested and the remission granted will be cancelled.
