Tirupati: A pilgrimage ended in a tragedy when seven people including an infant were killed and two others injured when their speeding car caught fire after crashing into a culvert near Ithepalle under Chandragiri Mandal in Chittoor district on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Jisitha (six months), Meena (30), K Suresh Kumar (36), P Hymavathi (51), Govinda Rao (60), and Srirama Murthy. The deceased belonged to Medamarthi village under Santhakaviti Mandal in the Srikakulam district.
Police said that the family was heading towards Tirupati-Tirumala to have a darshan of Lord Balaji and tonsure the child. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
The fatal accident occurred when the car carrying around eight people from the Srikakulam district crashed into the culvert and flipped onto the other side of the road before it caught fire. Five of them died on the spot. It appears that the driver, who was overspeeding, might have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Passers-by tried to douse the flames and pull out the victims from the car. Three persons suffered severe injuries in the incident and were shifted to the RUIA hospital at Tirupati, where one of them succumbed.
Police said the vehicle was completely burnt in the accident. Police and five service authorities reached the accident spot and with the help of locals rushed the injured to the hospital.
