This year, 11 personnel laid down their lives while discharging their duties.
The beginning of Police Commemoration Day goes back to 21 October 1959 when a patrol party of CRPF led by SI Karam Singh was ambushed by the Chinese troops at the hot springs in Ladakh. All 10 jawans lost their lives fighting at an altitude of 16,000 ft in extremely hostile conditions. Their martyrdom is remembered all over the country as the Police Commemoration Day every year. All the police personnel killed/died while on duty during the year are also remembered on this day.
The commemoration programme commences on 21 October and culminates on 31 October as National Unity Day (Ekta Diwas) in all police districts/commissionerates, battalions, and training colleges/centers.
A series of programmes are taken up by the police during the period in memory of the martyrs to create awareness about their sacrifices.
On Thursday, a smrithi parade will be organised at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, Vijayawada, where the names and ranks of all the personnel who laid down their lives while discharging their duty during the preceding year all over the nation will be read and tributes will be paid.
Families of the deceased personnel will be visited by senior officers to address their problems, if any, and to ensure their general well-being.
Further, officers will visit the martyred police personnels' villages, towns, and schools in their jurisdiction and get their deeds highlighted in the locality/educational institutions by placing their photographs in the respective police stations during the period 22 to 30 October.
"Open House" will be organised at district headquarters on 26 and 27 October. Debate and essay writing competitions will be organised for college and school students, police personnel, and police children from 24 to 27 October. Medical camps will be organized for the policemen and general public on 28 October at every district and unit headquarters.
