Visakhapatnam: Police have taken senior TDP leader and MLA from Visakhapatnam East Velagapudi Ramakrishnababu and Telugu Nadu Students Front (TNSF) leader Pranav Gopal into preventive custody for violating election rules at Vizag.

Three Town circle inspector K Eswara Rao said the duo have been taken into preventive custody since they entered prohibited 100 meters at a polling booth under 21st ward in China Waltair. They were later released on bail.

The MLA and the student leader rushed to the polling booth after TDP candidate P Avinash complained that the ruling YSRC workers were rigging the polls. Around 200 YSRC workers tried to prevent them from entering the booth.

Ruling party workers later tried to block MLA's vehicle. However, his supporters managed to whisk him away. Police picked up the duo from AU High School grounds and took them into preventive custody.

The 21st ward assumes importance since the YSRC mayoral candidate and party's city president is contesting against Independent candidate Ghouse Mohammed.

It may be recalled that senior YSRC leaders recently threatened Ghouse to withdraw his nomination. His wife Unnisa won the corporation election as an independent in 2007.
