"A schedule has been announced to complete the whole project by March 2026-27. This is a joyful development. I welcome it wholeheartedly," said Naidu, addressing a press conference at the Secretariat here.
Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Finance Minister Nimala Sitharaman and Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, he termed the development historic.
According to the CM, Polavaram Project's spillway, gates, approach and connectivity would be completed by May 2025, among other works and the whole project would be completed by March 2027.
Polavaram Project is on the river Godavari near Ramayyapeta village in Polavaram Mandalam of Eluru district, located about 34 km upstream of Kovvuru-Rajahmundry road-cum-rail bridge.
The mega irrigation project can store 194 tmc of water, enable the utilisation of 322 tmc of water, irrigate 7.2 lakh acres, offer drinking water to 28.5 lakh people and generate 960 MW of hydropower.
Saving about 500 tmc to 700 tmc Godavari river waters draining into the sea using the project and supplementing them with the existing water resources available across the state will obviate the scope for famine, Naidu had said earlier.
