Vijayawada: Maha Shivaratri celebrations ended on a tragic note when 10 people died in different mishaps after attending night long prayers in Andhra Pradesh.

The devotees stay awake for the entire night and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Later they take a holy dip in the sea and river before returning home.

Most of them met with accidents and drowned while taking a holy dip following the auspicious night of Maha Shivaratri on Friday.

Two persons died when they reportedly fell from their two-wheeler in an under-construction road at SOS Junction in Vizag on Friday. Another drowned at Yarada beach while taking the holy dip after the auspicious night.

The deceased were identified as Ram Babu, 35, and Nookaraju, 30, both residents of Kamma Veedhi in Vizianagaram.

According to the police, the incident occurred when the duo were going to Visakhapatnam from Vizianagaram to attend Maha Sivaratri prayers and take a holy dip at a beach.

The duo reportedly failed to read the diversion notice and hit the under-construction road. Both suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem and a case has been registered.

In a separate incident, three people died when their car plunged into a canal at Atheryapuram in East Godavari district.

Police said five persons, who live in the same apartment at Gollalakoderu in West Godavari district, had come to Vasanthavada village to take part in Maha Shivaratri celebrations.

After prayers, they started their return journey after midnight. When the car reached Lolla Locks, the driver lost control over the car and plunged into the agricultural canal.

Three died of drowning, while two swam to the shore. The deceased have been identified as Chintalapati Srinivasa Raju, 46, Manthena Suresh Verma, 45, and Indukuri Satyannarayana Raju, 46. Mudunuri Ganapathi Raju and Sitharama Raju swam to the shore.

Police suspect that due to sleeplessness, the driver dosed off which resulted in the mishap.

Separately, two persons died in a hit and run incident at Nellore. The duo was on their way home back after prayers when a speedy car hit them. Cops are yet to trace the vehicle.

In Kadapa, two students drowned while taking a dip in Penna River after Shivaratri celebrations.
