Steam coal to crude oil: Visakhapatnam Port handled record 73.73 million tonnes of cargo

It is 7 percent more than last year. In 2021-22, the Port handled 69.03 million tonnes. The previous highest was 72.72 million tonnes in 2019-20, said chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Authority K Rama Mohan Rao.
Addressing a press conference in Visakhapatnam on Friday, the chairman said the steam coal cargo handling went up by 67 percent i.e from 70.05 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 to 117.10 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. The crude oil was 13 percent high from 142.49 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 to 161.25 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. Similarly, the coking coal handling went by 11 percent and fertilizers by 6 percent.
But the thermal coal handling was down by 57 percent. It was 25.96 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 and 11.29 in 2022-23.
The chairman said as a part of making VPA a landlord port, three PPP projects were awarded to various agencies with an investment of Rs 655 crore. He said another two projects were in the advanced stage.
Among the achievements during this financial year, the chairman said Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the modernization of the fishing harbor under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the works were in full progress.
He said Rs 120 crore was being invested to construct a covered storage facility to store 15 lakh tonnes of cargo, which will mitigate the pollution.
