TDP, YSRCP clash over Andhra college ragging video; cops say video’s old

The footage shows a group of senior students physically assaulting their juniors in a room using sticks. The seniors can be seen laughing and egging each other on as the victims plead for mercy. The video has sparked outrage and raised concerns about students’ safety and the need to address ragging in educational institutions.
The official X handle of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) shared the video, questioning the law and order situation in the State. Criticising home minister Vangalapudi Anitha, the YSRCP alleged that ragging in colleges has escalated to unprecedented levels under the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government.
Video is from February, says Narasaraopet police
Police said the video was recorded in February at a hostel of Sri Subbaraya and Narayana College in Narasaraopet.

YSRCP deliberately suppressed the video, says TDP
TDP National Spokesperson Jyothsna Tirunagari wrote on X that the ragging incident actually took place in February 2024, during the tenure of the YSRCP government led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. She alleged that the YSRCP regime had deliberately suppressed the video, but after the TDP government took office, the victims came forward and filed a formal complaint.
Additionally, the official X handle of TDP posted a video statement from Narasaraopeta One Town CI Krishna Reddy.
The police official said, “The students of SSN College possessing NCC ‘C’ certificates were involved in ragging and attacking the NCC ‘D’ certificate students. The incident happened on February 2 in the college hostel room. A video of the assault was recorded at the time. Recently, the video went viral on social media and was shared by a section of students. Based on this, the police conducted an investigation and took a complaint from the injured students. Stern action will be taken against those found guilty.”
