Visakhapatnam: Six Maoists including three women were killed during an encounter with Greyhound forces at Theegalametta forest areas under Mampa police station limits of Koyyuru Mandal in Vizag Agency of Andhra Pradesh.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning. Based on reliable intelligence input, the AP elite anti-Maoists forces launched a combing operation in dense forests near Theegalametta village.
The extremists opened fire at the security forces. Greyhound forces immediately retaliated. In the ensuing gunfight that lasted for 30 minutes, six Maoists were killed. Later all six bodies were recovered from the spot.
Police said that three women Maoists were among the slain. Police said they sustained bullet injuries in the gunfight and later succumbed. Police are yet to establish the identity of the deceased Maoists.
Police also recovered one AK-47 rifle, one SLR rifle and one Carbine, three 303 riffles, and one country-made gun from the spot.
It was probably the biggest gun battle in Vizag Agency in recent times. It may be recalled that 30 cadres including top leaders of the Maoist party were gunned down in the Ramguda encounter under Malkangiri district of Odisha on October 24, 2016.
Police suspect that some Maoists escaped from the spot with bullet injuries. Police said the combing operation is continuing and there are chances that the death toll may increase.
