Vijayawada: In a bizarre incident, unidentified persons stole five crates of tomatoes from a vegetable market at Penuganchiprolu in Krishna district. This comes after tomato prices skyrocketed and hit Rs. 120-150 per kg.
The incident occurred on Thursday night and came to light on Friday after vendors noticed that five crates of tomatoes were missing.
The vendors said each tray of tomatoes would be worth over Rs. 2,500 and the total amount of stolen tomatoes was estimated to be around Rs. 7,500.
The police said they are aware of the incident but they have not received any complaint so far. The vendors said that it is difficult to nab the miscreants.
Earlier, tomatoes were being sold for Rs. 130 per kg in Vizag, Vijayawada, and other cities of Andhra Pradesh. Last week, traders had predicted that the prices would likely touch Rs. 150 as heavy rains had caused massive damage to the standing crops in Chittor, Kurnool, Kadapa, and Anantapur.
