Top woman Maoist surrenders in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: A notorious woman Maoist carrying a cash reward of Rs 4 lakh for her capture surrendered before the Vizag Rural Police. She was identified as 26-year-old Korra Kumari alias Swetha of Mettaguda village under GK Veedhi Mandal in Vizag Agency. Kumari was an area committee member (ACM) of the Pedabayalu Dalam of the outlawed CPI (Maoist).

Superintendent of Police (Visakha Rural) B. Krishna Rao said that Kumari was involved in as many as 46 offenses which include six murders, five exchange of fires (EoFs), two blastings, three arsons, two kidnaps, and 28 other offenses.

The SP said that Kumari was attracted towards revolutionary speeches and songs rendered by Maoist party activists Kailasam, Bhavani and few others in 2009 and was impressed by their acts like distribution of lands to the landless.

Her uncle and senior leader of Maoists Gemmili Jambri, Galikonda Dalam Commander Krishna and Vasantha, Kumari motivated her to join as militia in the Galikonda area in 2009. Subsequently, she was elevated as Dalam member in 2010 and ACB in 2015. Since 2015, she has been working as ACM in Pedabayalu Dalam and was given an SLR weapon.

She had played a crucial role in the recent exchange of fire at Thadakapalli, Teegalametta, and Landulu between the Maoists and the security forces and she has direct connections with the recent landmine blasting incidents. She took part in the murders of Gemmili Krishna Rao of Vakapalli village and Chikkudu Sathish of Inupateegalu village.

The police claimed the reasons for the surrender of Kumari are due to the dominance and high-handedness of non-tribal leaders like Aruna against tribals, separation from family members for almost 11 years, death of her colleagues in the recent encounters, and persistent combing operations by the police and few other reasons.

The surrendered Maoists claimed that she met Maoist top leader Akkiraju Haragopal alias RK in 2019 in Vizag Agency. Most of the Maoists are struggling to get treatment for illness and she attributed RK death and another Maoist Kudumula Ravi to acute illness and no medication. The Maoist leaders did not provide proper medical care to their cadre and hence surrendered, she revealed. There is a dearth of tribal leadership and the death of RK is a loss to the Maoists party but the organization will continue.

"I would lead a peaceful life and wouldn't go back again into the outfit,'' Kumari added.
