Vizag: Court directs 52 drunk drivers to clean beach, video goes viral

Visakhapatnam: A local court has asked 52 people booked for drunken driving to clean the beach at Vizag as a punishment. The video of men cleaning the beach has broken the internet A total of 52 persons were caught for drunken driving. Instead of imposing fines, the persons were told to do social service which helped in changing their attitude. This is the first of its kind initiative in Andhra Pradesh.

ADCP (Traffic) Sheik Arifullah said on February 21, police took 52 persons to different locations of the RK beach. The violators were made to collect litter. Those booked included students, private employees, and auto-rickshaw drivers. A video of people cleaning the Vizag beach has gone viral. Many netizens have suggested the neighboring Telugu state implement this idea.

Traffic Duty:

A few years back, other than imposing fines, the court directed the drunk-drive offenders to perform traffic duties at the major junctions including Jagadamba Siripuram, and NAD in the city. The violators were also made to hold placards at the traffic signals, advising people not to drive under the influence of alcohol.

According to City Police Commissioner Ch Srikanth, in 2022, they booked over 8,893 cases of drunken driving. Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in Visakhapatnam suspended the driving licenses (DLs) of 1,140 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol in Vizag. On New Year 2023, around 200 cases were booked for drunk and driving. They included 76 people who were caught consuming alcohol in public places.
