RTA officials said during the current financial year, 493 challenges were issued and the compounding fee of Rs 2.01 crore was collected from erring drivers.
Deputy Transport Commissioner, Vizag, GC Raja Ratnam said they have formed special teams to crack down against overloading.
"An overloaded vehicle not only damages the road but also becomes a major reason for fatal accidents on NHs and SHs. It is very difficult to control these vehicles," he said.
The teams have conducted awareness drives among the industrialists and private transport companies against overloading. Vizag city roads have been claiming over 300 lives every year. "Road safety is our prime concern. Overloaded vehicles are dangerous," he said.
Officials said the crackdown against overloading will further intensify in the coming days. Violators will be charged fine between Rs 24,000 and Rs one lakh.
"We have also observed that some of the people are indulging in recklessness and carelessness driving despite repeated instructions. We will not tolerate violations including the use of mobile phones while driving. The violators will be held accountable," he added.
