Vizag sees rise in vector-borne diseases reporting 1,383 cases

Visakhapatnam: The district has seen a steep rise in vector-borne diseases reporting around 42 per cent of the state's seasonal disease cases. Of the total 3,271 cases of vector-borne disease reported in the state, Vizag alone reported 1,383 cases.

According to the health department, the district reported as many as 613 dengue cases till 24 September and saw 744 cases of malaria and 25 cases of chikungunya. In 2020, the district had reported only 232 cases of dengue and 1,262 cases of malaria.

Government hospitals, including King George Hospital (KGH), and many private hospitals have been treating a large number of patients suffering from dengue. They are admitting dengue cases on a daily basis.

Overall, the state saw a rise in seasonal diseases in all 13 districts. AP has reported 2,093 cases of dengue, 1,145 cases of malaria, and 33 cases of chikungunya. In 2020, it had reported 2,093 cases of dengue, 2,047 cases of malaria, 28 cases of chikungunya, and a lone case of Japanese Encephalitis.

Apart from Vizag, Guntur has reported 351 dengue cases followed by East Godavari (290), West Godavari (157), Anantapur (128), Vizianagaram (124), Krishna (109), and Kurnool (106). The remaining five districts have reported cases in double digits.

Meanwhile, East Godavari district has reported 84 cases of malaria, Vizianagaram (82), West Godavari (70), and Kurnool (44).

COVID-19 cases in AP

The coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh have been choppy since last month. The cases vary with the number of tests conducted. On Friday, the state reported 1,246 fresh cases taking the total tally to 20,44,490.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 death toll increased to 14,118 with 10 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours, including two each in Chittoor and Krishna and one each in East Godavari, Nellore, Guntur, Prakasam, Srikakulam, and Visakhapatnam districts.

As many as 1,450 new patients were cured on Friday taking the total recoveries to 20,16,837. There are currently 13,537 active cases in the state. According to district-wise data, Chittoor reported 207 new infections, followed by East Godavari with 168 cases, and Nellore with 158 cases. Vizianagaram, Kurnool, and Anantapur have logged the least number of cases reporting 13 cases in the last 24 hours.

Andhra Pradesh conducted 55,323 COVID-19 tests in the last 24 hours taking the total tests conducted in the state so far to 2.80 crore.
