Visakhapatnam, November 25: Karanam Eswara Rao, the inspector of Three-Town police station, was killed, while his driver Santhosh suffered severe injuries when their patrolling vehicle rammed into a slow-moving truck on NH-16 near Yendada in Vizag city in the wee hours of Thursday.
Police said the incident took place when the 58-year-old officer was on his way home at Madhurawada after a night patrol.
Police suspect that the speedy patrol vehicle might have hit a slow-moving truck from behind. The front portion of the police vehicle was completely damaged in the incident.
The impact of the accident was so huge that Eswara Rao's head got smashed.
Santhosh also suffered injuries in the incident. Santhosh. He has been shifted to GITAM Hospital near Rushikonda for treatment.
City Police Chief Manish Kumar Sinha said Eswara Rao was a sincere and dedicated police officer. The sudden demise of Rao is a great loss to the police department, he added.
Police said that they are examining the CCTV footage to ascertain the exact reasons for the accident. Police are also trying to identify the truck which left the place after the accident.
