Visitors to the Vizag zoo will have the opportunity to witness these adorable babies in the enclosure and also learn about the conservation efforts.
Weeks earlier, a clutch of around 10-15 mugger crocodile eggs was discovered in the nesting area within the enclosure. The team immediately took necessary measures to ensure the successful incubation and hatching of the eggs under the care and observation of the animal keeper.
Over time, the team closely monitored the incubation process, carefully regulating temperature and humidity levels within the nesting environment. After the incubation period was completed, all eggs successfully hatched on 25 May. All hatchlings appear to be in good health and active. According to zoo officials, the exact number of babies cannot be said because the mother is protecting the babies.
āIndira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) has been actively involved in the conservation and breeding of this species among various other species, aiming to increase their population and ensure their survival for future generations. Now, the conservation team will continue to provide round-the-clock care for the mugger crocodile babies. The team will monitor their growth, nutrition, and overall well-being, while also providing essential medical attention when required,ā said zoo curator Dr. Nandani Salaria.
In 2018, IGZP brought two mugger crocodiles (a male and a female) as part of an animal exchange programme from Pilukula Biological Park at Manguluru in Karnataka. Currently, the zoo has three other crocodile species.
