Vizianagaram: Police have busted a beef smuggling racket and seized 25 tonnes of illegal meat from a truck near Dasannapeta Junction in Vizianagaram Town.

On a tip-off, BJP activists intercepted a container truck and informed the Two-Town police station.

Police immediately rushed to the spot and nabbed the driver and assistant driver. A case has also been registered against the owner of the truck Anil Kumar Chowdhary, a native of Gudivada in Krishna district.

Inspector of Two-Town police station Ch Lakshmana Rao said since there are no recognized abattoirs in Vizianagaram, the smugglers engaged some people for slaughtering cows, buffalos, and bulls at few places in the district. "Beef was being transported to Hyderabad," he said.

Police have sent samples to a laboratory to ascertain whether the seized meat was beef or not. Police said they will investigate the case from multiple angles and nab all the persons involved in the illegal beef smuggling racket.

Police are also examining the documents of the truck as BJP leaders alleged that another vehicle was operating with the same registration number.
