Vizianagaram: Five people were killed and 25 others injured in a multiple-vehicle collision at Sunkaripeta in Vizianagaram district on Monday.
Police said there was a head-on collision between a bus and LPG cylinder-laden lorry at Sunkaripeta . Later driver of another bus lost control and rammed into the passenger vehicle resulting in fatalities.
Police said smog caused by the burning of waste near the roadside had reduced the visibility which led to the fatal accident.
Police said that drivers of both buses and three passengers died on the spot. Over 25 persons suffered injuries in the incident. The injured were shifted to the local hospital, where the condition of three persons is said to be critical.
The accident led to traffic jams for hours. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and removed the mangled vehicles.
Two bodies have been identified so far. Efforts are on to identify three other bodies.
The motorists alleged that the burning of waste at the dumping yard is causing smog and reducing visibility. But the authorities have not taken any step in this regard.
Vizianagaram Police Chief B Raja Kumari visited the accident spot and supervised the rescue operations.
It may be recalled that Andhra Pradesh witnessed two fatal road accidents on Sunday that left 11 people dead in Krishna and Nellore districts.
