The incident occurred on Monday when the couple fled their homes and reportedly jumped into Thotapalli Barrage to end their life.
However, police are yet to confirm whether the lovers actually jumped into the river or not. Fire service personnel and police have launched a search operation after they found shoes and a motorbike near the river bank.
Police said 20- year-old Rajesh from the Bobbili area was in a relationship with a minor girl under Kurupam Mandal in the district. When their elders opposed their relationship, they fled from their homes on Sunday.
The girl's parents reported the matter to Kurupam police which registered a case of abduction and launched a search operation.
On Monday, Rajesh sent a video message to his friends in which he along with the minor girl mentioned that they were jumping into the river.
Rajesh's friends, who received the video clipping, alerted the police in Kurupam.
Based on the information, police rushed to the Thotapalli Barrage, where they found a bike and footwear of Rajesh.
"We have launched a search operation with the support of fire service personnel to trace the missing lovers. We also suspect that the couple might have misguided their elders and police with the video message. As of now, we have not found any body so far,'' police said.
