Guntur: Every eye became moist when a small daughter walked up to her grieving mother and asked in a feeble voice when her father will be home. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she felt short of words to convince her daughter.

Y Anand Kumar, a peanut seller, went missing 45 days ago. His wife had lodged a missing complaint but police failed to locate him. However, Guntur police were in for a shock when three rape accused revealed that they hacked Kumar to death before sexually assaulting the nurse at Seethanagaram under Tadepalli Mandal in Guntur district.

"My daughter is still thinking her father will come back. She is asking when he will return," says a 30- year-old woman.

Guntur police said the rape accused did not know the deceased. They were only able to identify him by corroborating missing cases filed during that day that matched the description of Kumar.

Police said one of the mobile phones recovered from the accused in the gang-rape case belonged to Kumar.

Kumar's wife had filed a missing complaint with Tadepalli police saying she last spoke to her husband on June 19 when he was at the railway track. She said he was no able to hear her due to the loud sound of a train passing by.

The accused – S Krishna, Sheikh Habib, and Venkat Reddy alias Prasanna Reddy --were loitering at the same spot trying to steal copper wires from the railway overhead cable.

Kumar who was passing by witnessed the incident. Venkat Reddy stopped and began questioning him. Soon, Krishna approached him and stole Rs 2,500 cash, and asked him to leave.

However, after realizing that he could inform the cops stationed on the other side of the railway bridge, Venkat Reddy attacked Kumar and dumped his body in Krishna River.

Police said that Kumar used to stay at Ajit Singh Nagar. He used to visit his hometown Chintalapudi to meet his family once a month.

After Anand did not respond to his wife's calls till June 22, she informed Tadepalli police on July 23.
