Vizianagaram: A 35-year-old woman who was forced to stay indoors for almost 11 years by her husband and in-laws was rescued by the Vizianagaram police. The police entered the house located in the Cantonment locality, following court orders.

The woman, Sai Supriya of Anantapur district, married Godavari Madhusudhan, an advocate in Vizianagaram town, in 2008. The couple and their three children stayed in Bengaluru and later moved to Vizianagaram in 2011. Since then, Supriya was not allowed to go outside or interact with the neighbours and was locked inside the house. Even when her parents tried to contact and visit her, her husband did not allow them.

It is said that Madhusudhan used his influence as an advocate to warn her parents not to visit their house. In 2019, Supriya approached the Disha police and complained about her husband. But she later withdrew her complaint after she got assurance of Madhusudhan’s good behaviour.

Harassment continues

A few days later, Madhusudhan continued his harassment and his old behaviour. On 27 February, Supriya’s parents filed a petition with district SP Deepika Patil during the Spandana grievance programme. “On 28 February 2022, the police team and Supriya’s parents tried to rescue her, but Madhusudhan did not allow anyone to enter. He said the police had no right to enter his house without any warrant,” said One Town CI B. Venkata Rao.

Following this, her parents filed a petition in court seeking to rescue their daughter. “Based on the court order, our police team went to their house on 1 March and rescued Supriya,” the CI added. The woman looked pale and weak, locked up in the house for many years.
