Hyderabad: As many as 12 girl students studying Class 9 were bitten by rats at a government school residential school in Medak district. The injured students from the Ramayampeta Social Welfare Girls’ School were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Showing their wounds to the media persons, the girl students at the school narrated their ordeal. They said that the rats would come at night when they were sleeping and bite them.

Both students and parents said this is not the first time the students have faced this issue. “We have told the teachers and the vice principal about the problem many times but they didn’t do anything,” one of the students said. No matter how many times we complained that the dogs and rats were running wild on the premises, no one cared, the students said.

The students were bitten on Tuesday and Wednesday night when they were asleep in a room of the hostel, an official said on Thursday.

They were provided treatment at a primary health centre in Ramayampet Mandal and discharged. The official said they were taking necessary measures to curb the rat menace.

However, many of the parents of the students also came forward to talk about the abysmal state of the school and the hostel. The parents of the girls expressed anger over the mismanagement of the school by the authorities concerned.

“The bathrooms are dirty and need to be cleaned. There is an overall lack of cleanliness at the hostel. When we complained the same to the vice principal, they said that the issue can’t be solved by them,” said a parent.
