4 more Omicron cases in TS; total tally rises to 24

Of the four new cases, three were from random samples taken from passengers arriving from non-risk countries while one was a contact of a person who had earlier tested positive for the new COVID-19 variant
Out of the 24 who have tested positive for Omicron so far, 19 are from non-risk countries, four from at-risk countries, and one is a contact of an Omicron-positive person.
On Saturday, 12 new cases of Omicron were detected in Telangana and of these nine were foreigners. Six of the 12 had travelled from Kenya, two from Somalia, two from UAE, one from Ghana, and one from Tanzania.
On 21 December, 21,726 samples were tested at the Hyderabad airport out of which four tested positive for COVID-19. Their samples were sent for genome sequencing.
Overall, 9,122 passengers have been tested at RGIA of which 59 tested positive for COVID-19. Of the 59, 24 tested positive for Omicron, 22 tested negative, while the results of 13 samples are awaited.
172 new COVID-19 cases
Telangana added 172 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the cumulative caseload of the state to 6,79,892. No new deaths were reported on Tuesday. The COVID-19 death toll in the state now stands at 4,016 translating to a case fatality rate of 0.59 per cent.
In the last 24 hours, 188 people recovered from the virus across the state taking the overall recoveries to 6,72,251 constituting a recovery rate of 98.87%. The number of active cases in the state currently stands at 3,625.
As many as 39,919 samples were tested in the state during the past 24 hours out of which the results of 5,146 swab samples are awaited. A total of 2.93 crore COVID-19 tests have been carried out in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic.
