Adani Energy Solutions not installing power meters in Telangana; viral image is from Assam

An image of a smart power meter from Adani Energy Solutions is making the rounds on social media. The accompanying claim suggests that the Congress government in Telangana has outsourced power bill collection to a private agency.

This image is being shared in a context where Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticizes the BJP for favouring Adani; both in political rallies and in parliament. Despite these criticisms, the claim states that the Congress government in Telangana has outsourced power bill collection to Adani Energy Solutions.

The image is viral in the old city of Hyderabad. However, the claims are false. The meter carries information confirming that it is not from Telangana. It states that the meter is the property of APDCL, indicating it belongs to Assam Power Distribution Company Limited. Furthermore, while the Congress formed the government in Telangana in December 2023, the installation date on the meter is February 7, 2023.

A top official of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) has confirmed to NewsMeter that the state has not signed any contracts with private companies for power bill collection. Not a single meter in the state has been outsourced to a private agency; all collections remain under the control of TSSPDCL.

The official also confirmed that the picture is from Assam and that the meter seen in the picture is the property of Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).
