Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed energy department officials to create a comprehensive and forward-looking strategy to meet the State’s rapidly increasing electricity demand.

Highlighting that power consumption has reached unprecedented levels, he emphasised the need for robust planning to support the State’s developmental trajectory.

Energy needs to match industrial expansion

During a review meeting held at his residence in Jubilee Hills, the chief minister stated that Telangana is experiencing record-breaking investment inflows, with massive industrial expansion anticipated in the near future. He stressed that energy infrastructure must evolve accordingly to sustain this growth.

Focus on clean energy solutions

CM Revanth instructed officials to prepare a three-year power supply roadmap, factoring in the anticipated rise in demand due to industrial development, metro rail expansion, electric vehicles, Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and data centres. He emphasised a strong focus on renewable energy, particularly clean energy solutions such as floating solar and pumped storage projects.

9.8% increase in electricity demand

Officials reported that Telangana recorded a 9.8 per cent increase in electricity demand compared to the previous year, reaching a peak of 17,162 MW—the highest ever in the State. Forecasts indicate the demand could rise to 18,138 MW by 2025-26 and to 31,808 MW by 2034-35.

The chief minister underscored the importance of aligning energy planning with upcoming infrastructure projects, including irrigation schemes, metro and railway expansions and satellite townships. He also asked for coordination with HMDA to ensure energy support for developments along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR).

Power plans for Data City and Future City

CM Revanth outlined plans to develop Hyderabad into a hub for data centres, announcing the establishment of a dedicated ā€˜Data City.’ He instructed officials to modernise substations, upgrade transmission infrastructure and adopt underground cabling in future urban developments, particularly in the proposed ā€˜Future City’, where overhead lines will not be permitted.

Additionally, he suggested launching smart pole pilot projects in areas such as the Secretariat, Necklace Road and KBR Park. The chief minister also called for solar energy utilisation along the ORR and in public spaces like footpaths and drainage channels within GHMC limits.

With Telangana emerging as a focal point for technological and industrial growth, the chief minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality power supply through sustainable and innovative solutions.
