New Delhi/Hyderabad: All India Congress Committee (AICC) has nominated Vem Narender Reddy and Abhishek Manu Singhvi for Rajya Sabha elections from Telangana.

The decision follows the intense selection process within the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC). The AICC General Secretary, K C Venugopal, made the formal announcement on March 5.

Reddy Emerges from a Competitive Field

While the TPCC had reportedly submitted a list of 16 potential candidates for the high-stakes seat, the Congress high command ultimately placed its trust in Vem Narender Reddy. Reddy, a close confidant of chief minister A Revanth Reddy, was selected over a crowded field of aspirants, signaling the party's focus on rewarding loyal and strategically positioned leadership within the state.

Key Highlights of the Nomination

High Command Approval: Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge personally approved the candidature, underscoring the importance of the Telangana seat in the party's national strategy.

Strategic Timing: The nomination comes as part of the wider biennial elections for 2026, with the Congress also naming candidates for Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Administrative Experience: As a senior leader, Reddy's move to the Rajya Sabha is expected to strengthen Telangana's voice in New Delhi regarding state-specific developmental and security needs.

What This Means for Telangana

Vem Narender Reddy's nomination is seen as a move to consolidate the party's strength following recent administrative shifts in the state. His presence in the Rajya Sabha will likely be leveraged to advocate for the additional IPS officers and central funding recently requested by the Chief Minister in his meeting with the Union Home Ministry.

Vem Narender Reddy is close to the CM office, and there are many pending proposals in New Delhi for which there is a need to coordinate with the central government. The appointment is being seen as a move to ensure that there is constant touch with Delhi to focus on Telangana development projects and ensure that timely sanction from the central government is received.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi

Abhishek Manu Singhvi continues to provide the legal support that the Congress party needs to put up in the Parliament. A seasoned luminary in legal issues, Singhvi is expected to take the full six-year term to ensure that the Congress party is able to highlight the national issues effectively in the Upper House.

National Candidate Overview

Alongside the Telangana nomination, the AICC released a broader list of candidates selected to contest from various states:
