Dr. Preethi death case: Clamor grows for CBI probe; Telangana HC issues notice to govt

By Newsmeter Network Published on 26 April 2023 3:16 AM GMTTelangana: Telangana High Court has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police, Warangal, and others after a petitioner sought a CBI probe into the death of Dr. Dharavath Preethi.
A division bench of Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji was hearing PIL based on the letter addressed by M. Mallaiah, President, Scheduled Tribes Employees Welfare Association, BHEL Ramachandrapuram.
The petitioner said Dr.Dharavath Preethi, a first-year student of MD Anaesthesia at Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal died due to ragging and harassment by. Saif and his friends. He said they mocked and ridiculed Dr. Dharavath Preethi for her caste.
He said Dr. Dharavath Preethi was a Scheduled Tribe candidate and she was subjected to ragging. He alleged that she died after Saif and his friends forcibly injected poisonous injections into her body on February 26.
The High Court issued Notices to the Chief Secretary; Principal Secretary, Medical and Health Department; Director of Medical Education; Commissioner of Police, Warangal; Principal, Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal and Head of the Department, Anaesthesia Department, Kakatiya Medical College. The court directed them to respond to the notices by July 28.
The petitioner said though the parents of the deceased gave a complaint to the police and other officials, all their efforts to get the culprits booked went in vain. The petitioner sought a direction to the police to register a case under section 302 of IPC against crime against Saif and his associates. He also sought a CBI probe into the death of Dr. Dharavath Preethi and compensation to the parents of the deceased.
The case is adjourned to July 28.

On February 22, Preethi attempted suicide by injecting herself with a heavy dose of suspected anesthesia in the MGM Hospital. She was found unconscious, and the hospital administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Later she was shifted to NIMS, Hyderabad. She died at the NIMS, Hyderabad, on February 26.
Preethi took this extreme decision due to harassment by Dr. Saif, a second-year student in the Department of Anesthesia at the KMC. During the preliminary investigation, the police examined 17 WhatsApp chats of the accused Dr Saif. After a complaint was registered by Preethi's father Narender, an ASI in the Railway Police Force (RPF), a case was registered in the Mattewada police station (Warangal commissionerate), and Dr Saif was arrested and sent to 14 days remand.
