Gandhi Hospital mortuary case: Telangana HC disposes of suo motu PIL

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court disposed of suo motu PIL after the government filed a status report about the steps taken in providing a sufficient number of cold storage boxes at Gandhi Hospital to preserve bodies.

A division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice N.V. Shravan Kumar was adjudicating suo motu PIL based on a news item about bodies lying to rot in Gandhi Hospital’s mortuary.

Banda Shivananda Prasad, Advocate General, informed the Court that a status report has been filed detailing the steps taken by the state in providing a sufficient number of cold storage boxes to hospital for preserving dead bodies.

AG informed the Court that there are 62 CS boxes available in the Gandhi Hospital, out of which only 6 Freezer boxes are not functioning.

Prior to the High Court’s suo motu PIL, there were 60 boxes. Of these, only 25 were functional. Due to this, 15 to 20 dead bodies received at the Gandhi Hospital daily get decomposed.
