Green energy in Telangana will drive future, says CM Revanth Reddy

With the climate crisis and emerging changes in weather patterns, the chief minister was speaking at the Mumbai Climate week in Mumbai where he chalked out the green footsteps of the state.

He also unveiled the roadmap to transform the state into a $3 trillion economy by 2047.

The Vision: From 1947 to 2047

Reflecting on India's journey, the Chief Minister noted that while the era from 1950 to 1990 achieved food sufficiency and the 1991 reforms turned India into a services powerhouse, the "manufacturing opportunity" was largely missed.

“To understand 2047, we must begin with 1947,” Reddy stated. He emphasized that in a post-Covid world, the "real currency" of any economy is power. With Telangana’s energy demand projected to more than double to 34,000 MW by 2034, he pledged that the state would lead a manufacturing revolution fueled by renewable sources.

The "Currency of the Future"

  • Energy as Currency: He argued that power is the "real currency" of any modern economy. He linked the state's goal of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047 directly to its ability to generate and consume green energy.

  • Green Manufacturing: He called for a "manufacturing revolution" powered by green energy, positioning Telangana as a global alternative (the "China +1" strategy) where products are made with a zero-carbon footprint.

2. Specific Net-Zero Initiatives for Hyderabad

  • Net-Zero Goal by 2034: He set an ambitious target for Hyderabad to reach Net Zero a full decade before the state's larger 2047 milestones.

  • City-Wide Carbon Audit: He announced that Hyderabad will soon undergo a comprehensive carbon footprint audit to scientifically track and reduce emissions.

  • Industrial Relocation: To improve urban air quality and meet climate goals, he stated that within the next five years, almost no industry or factory will remain within the core urban area of Hyderabad; they will all be shifted to peri-urban zones powered by renewable grids.

3. "Climate-Proofing" Infrastructure

  • Musi River Rejuvenation: He described the restoration of the 50km stretch of the Musi River as a "dream project" intended not just for tourism, but as a vital ecological buffer for the city.

  • HYDRAA (Environmental Police): He highlighted the creation of HYDRAA, India’s first dedicated environmental police force, tasked specifically with protecting lakes and green spaces from encroachment and pollution.

4. Green Transport Revolution

  • EV Ecosystem: Beyond removing taxes on electric vehicles, he mentioned active negotiations to bring EV manufacturing firms to Telangana, ensuring that the vehicles used in the state are also built there.

  • Retrofitting 200,000 Autos: A major climate action item involves transitioning the city's vast fleet of over 200,000 autorickshaws to green energy alternatives.

The Chief Minister reiterated that Telangana’s current $200 billion GDP is just the starting point. The state aims to reach $1 trillion by 2034 and $3 trillion by 2047, contributing a full 10% to India’s national GDP. To ensure transparency and scientific growth, Hyderabad will soon undergo a comprehensive carbon footprint audit.
